Can a Horse That Has Never Run 3200 Metres Stay?

How I judge whether a horse that has never run 3200 metres will actually stay the Melbourne Cup trip.

Can a Horse That Has Never Run 3200 Metres Stay?

Distance is one of the factors I work through before the Melbourne Cup. By distance I mean being able to run a strong 3200, or at least having the confidence that a horse is going to run out that strong 3200. It sounds simple. It is not. Plenty of horses look like stayers over 2400 metres and then get found out by the extra 800. So this is about how I try to separate the two.

So You Think and the limits of class

Go back in time to So You Think. A champion. He came into the Cup off a Cox Plate and then a MacKinnon win four days before. In the Cummings colours he ran third. Americain won it, and I was on the second horse up the fence, Maluckyday. So You Think could not get the 3200.

What he did after that tells you plenty. He went overseas and won over 2000 metres multiple times. He ran fourth in an Arc over 2400. But he only went beyond 2040 metres twice in his career, once in the Cup and once in the Arc. His best work was at a shorter trip. Class gets you a long way in a Melbourne Cup, but it does not manufacture two miles.

Why the eye can lie over the extra 800

Buckaroo is the modern example. He ran second in the Caulfield Cup and hit the line pretty well. On the eye, he looked like a horse crying out for further. But he had never won past 1800 metres. Then he went to a Caulfield Cup over 2400, then straight into a Melbourne Cup over 3200. He drew barrier 20, so he was going to have to do a bit extra work as well.

Lloyd Williams said in pre-race that he did not think Buckaroo would stay the distance, based on what the horse had done in Europe and based on his own eye. That is the point. Sometimes the eye can lie. A horse comes home strongly over 2400 and you assume the extra ground is a formality. It is not. That extra 800 metres makes a huge difference, and the Melbourne Cup exposes it more than any other race.

Staying credentials on paper still matter

This is why I want staying credentials on paper. If a horse has already run a strong 3200, or has form at close to it, I am not guessing. I am working from evidence. That is worth a lot in a race where so many runners are stepping into unknown territory.

Then you get the horses that simply have not run the trip. No amount of paper form helps there. You have to make your own mind up on whether they can or cannot stay, and that means going deeper with the clock and with the eye rather than just backing a nice finish over a shorter trip.

So when you go through the field, put every runner into one of those groups. Proven over the trip, unproven, or already found out at shorter. It will not answer everything, but it stops you falling in love with a strong 2400 metre finish and assuming the rest looks after itself.
