"How Much Does A Wide Barrier Really Cost A Horse?"

A wide barrier can stop a horse using its speed at all, which is why the same horse can look ordinary one start and strong the next.

"How Much Does A Wide Barrier Really Cost A Horse?"

Recorded September 2025 for PRIDE OF JENNI. Any figures mentioned are from that time.

A wide barrier does not just cost a horse ground. It can stop the horse using the things it is actually good at. If a horse has a fast cruising speed and good acceleration, it needs a spot in the run to use them. From a wide gate the rider often has to choose between fighting for that spot and taking a sit at the back, and plenty of the time they take the sit. The horse then runs home on a track where nothing is running home, and the form line looks ordinary when the horse was never allowed to race.

Why riders go back from wide gates

We have talked about this plenty of times. Wide alleys for certain stables bring the same answer. The rider goes back rather than trying to go forward and get in. That is a decision about the whole preparation, not just that one race. If the day is not the horse's grand final, there is no reason to burn a horse up crossing from out wide to hold a spot that costs more than it is worth. Wootton was the example. He was not able to use that cruising speed last start because of the barrier, and he went back.

What barrier one changes

From barrier one, Wootton will hunt up and sit a lot handier. I would say third or fourth, with the dream run. That matters because of what sits around him. Tempted goes from barrier four or five out to barrier eight and has a lot of pace drawn inside her. She might be able to get in, but she will not be sitting closer than she was. So the two of them swap. Tempted was in front of Wootton. Now I think Wootton is in front of Tempted. That is a big thing, because it reverses the whole complexion of the race.

Speed is no good if you cannot use it

Wootton has a fast cruising speed, a second-fast cruising speed in the race, and that is part of why I like him. But the acceleration backs it up as well. His acceleration figure is 112 against Tempted at 111. So he has very good tactical early speed, a strong cruising speed, and the acceleration to match. From barrier one he gets to use all of it. From the wide gate he got to use none of it. Same horse, same ability, different race entirely.

The same thing happens again and again

This is not a one-off. It is the same situation with Lady Shenandoah drawn out in barrier 10 at Moonee Valley. Wide gate, a rider with a decision to make, and the likely outcome is the horse goes back and does not get to show what it has.

So when a horse looks flat and the gate was wide, go back and ask whether it was ever in a position to use its strengths. If the answer is no, and it draws inside next time, that is where the value sits.
