"How Do You Handle a Losing Run?"
How to handle a losing run on the punt: believe you can win, trust and check your process, and understand why the run happened.
Recorded June 2025 for How to Punt Like a Pro in 2025 (Staking, Price, Mindset + Full Strategy Breakdown). Any figures mentioned are from that time.
I get asked about losing runs more than almost anything else. The honest answer is that most of it happens before the run starts. It comes down to mindset. You need to believe you can win, you need to believe in the process you set out with, and you need to understand why the losing run is happening in the first place. Get those three right and a bad patch is something you manage. Get them wrong and it will knock you out of the game.
Belief comes first
The number one thing for winning on the punt is believing. First, believing in yourself. Believing you can win. It is amazing how many people have a bet and do not actually believe they can win. That is the thing I am trying to change. You can win on the punt, and at the very least you can lose less.
The second part of belief is believing in your process. That sounds easy when things are going well. It gets hard when the bankroll comes down and your staking comes down with it. That is the moment you need to believe in the process you started out with. You have to trust it.
Go back and check your own numbers
Trusting the process does not mean ignoring it. You analyse it. When I am having a really rough run, I go home and run a lot of analysis queries. I look back and see what my edge is. I look at whether I can refine that edge a bit, whether there is anything worth adding in.
That work does two things. It tells you whether anything has actually changed, and it gives you confidence. This is why tracking your results matters so much. If you can go back and look at your past results, you have something real to look at instead of just how you feel after a bad week. It helps you handle losing runs, and it helps you handle winning runs too.
Understand why the run happened
The other big one is understanding why you had the losing run. That means understanding gambling itself.
Say you have been winning at thirty percent profit on turnover after a massive run. That is not going to last. So when you dip and come back to a range of five to ten percent, which is a very good profit on turnover, that is okay. Do not be alarmed. Do not think the world is ending. The reason it happened is that you were winning too much.
This game does not let you get too far ahead. Nobody gets too far ahead of it. It will eat you up and bring you back down to earth. Your job is to manage that and stay consistent. Part of getting better is embracing the pain of a losing run rather than running from it.
So next time the bank is falling, do the work instead of changing everything. Check your records, look at your edge, work out whether this is a real problem or just a return to normal, and keep your staking consistent while you do it.
