What a Cruising Rank of One Tells You About a Horse
A cruising rank of one means a horse can lead even if the map says it sits third or fourth, and that matters.

A cruising rank of one does not mean a horse will lead. It means it can. That is the bit a lot of punters skip over. When I am going through a race and I see a horse rated number one for cruising speed, I am not just thinking about where the map puts it. I am thinking about what the rider can do with that speed if the race opens up in front of them. Two runs on the same day showed both sides of it.
Why cruising rank matters when you do not expect the horse to lead
I spoke about Private Eye before the day started, and the big thing with him was a cruising rank of one. I was not sure he was going to lead. The map did not scream it. But Nash took the initiative, went to the front, and got the result. That is the whole point. If a horse is rated one for cruising speed, it has the ability to lead, even if you have it pencilled in to sit second or third. You are not betting on the map. You are betting on the engine and the hands on the reins.
So when I am looking at a horse that I expect to sit third or fourth, and it has a cruising rank of one, I treat that as a live option rather than a quirk of the figures. With a good jockey who has initiative, it is extremely important. They can take the race by the throat if it is there to be taken, and you are not left hoping for luck in running.
When the speed does not get used
Then you get the other side of it. Peloton was my best bet of the day. He also had a cruising rank of one. He sat third on the fence. He could have led if he wanted to, but he chose to sit there instead. He had every hope and he went down.
I am not saying Peloton would have won if he had led. I do not think he would have. But if the opportunity to lead is there and you have that cruising rank, I think you should take it. That is the difference between the two runs. Same figure, different decision from the saddle, different outcome. You cannot control that part, but you can at least understand what you are backing and why.
The part nobody talks about
Five minutes after Peloton went down, Our Robberies was in front in Brisbane with Damien Thornton. Maloney came out of the pack on Spywire and we were still two lengths clear. I was desperate to get it home. Spywire got us on the line.
If you punt, you have felt that. Your best bet goes down, you line up again straight away, and you get beaten on the line. I had to walk out, clear my head, and come back calm. That is a real part of this, and pretending otherwise does not help anyone.
Use the cruising rank as what it is. A marker of ability, not a prediction. Note which jockeys back themselves to use it, and accept that some days the speed sits in the saddle unused.
