Kyneton Race 8 Preview: Sun Gift Rated The Cup Play
Kyneton Race 8 preview: pace map, metrics and Kingsley's top four for the $125,000 feature, with Sun Gift rated $2.80 against a $3.50 market.
Eight runners, $125,000 on the line and thunderstorms forecast for a 4:55pm AEDT jump. Kyneton Race 8 is the sort of small-field feature where the pace map does most of the talking, and Kingsley's rated card disagrees with the release market on the two at the head of it.
The race
Kyneton Race 8 on Wednesday, 4 November, is a $125,000 contest over a field of eight with the rail out one metre for the entire circuit. Thunderstorms are forecast. The Pendragon (1) carries the grade's top weight of 59kg for Ben, Will and Jd Hayes with Damian Lane aboard, while five of the eight runners are down on 54kg or less, which is where a chunk of the story sits. The pace picture
The tempo band reads Average with a pressure figure of 55.22 per cent — a race with structure rather than a genuine speed battle. Bring Forth (6) is the only runner with a ppir of 1, so he maps to lead from barrier four, with Yahoo Bar (10) next closest on a ppir of 2 and Real Class (5) third on 3. Sun Gift (4) sits on a ppir of 4, meaning she settles in the first half of the field from the two gate, which is the key change on her most recent run.
Behind them it gets harder. Prince Eric (2) rates a ppir of 5 despite the inside gate, and Kingsley's read is that he maps to get a long way back once more — the Caulfield margin flattered nobody given he never got clear air, but the shape asks the same question again. Virtuous Circle (3) is the deepest in the field on a ppir of 8, which is the sting in an otherwise strong case. Ragazzone (11) is on a ppir of 7, so despite the view that a handier spot suits him better than his 2400m assignment, the grid has him making ground.
Kingsley's selections
His top pick is Sun Gift (4), and she is the one the card is loudest about. Rated $2.80 against a $3.50 market this morning — Kingsley has her shorter than the market does — she missed the kick at Flemington, got no favours and still kept coming in a blanket finish. Eleven starts around this trip have produced three wins and five seconds, she drops into a far kinder run from barrier two, and she also carries the official Back tip as the selection to take out the 2026 Kyneton Cup.
His second pick Bring Forth (6) is rated $14 against a $10 market this morning, so the market is shorter than the rating. He is second-up and fitter, and 7kg comes off after lugging 61kg at Caulfield. Eight placings from 19 starts says he keeps finding the frame, and this trip suits better. His third pick Ragazzone (11) is rated $18 against a $12 market this morning. He held his ground without quickening at Geelong, gets 4kg off and comes back in distance, with two wins from six starts leaving room to improve.
His fourth pick Virtuous Circle (3) is rated $18 against a $13 market this morning. He covered enormous ground wide at Coleraine and still hit the line, gets 4kg off, steps up in trip and is trained on this track by his local stable. The caveat is substantial: 879 days between wins, and the deepest settling position in the race.
The Pendragon (1) is the pointed omission. Rated $5.50 against a $3.90 market this morning, he won at Horsham with the run of the race from a sit and now shoulders top weight.
The metrics
CAM is the composite ability rating, and Sun Gift tops it with a camRank of 1 at 92.98, from Virtuous Circle second on 89.21 and Prince Eric third on 88.18. CSW rates class, speed and weight against the clock, and there Prince Eric leads with a cswRank of 1 on 93.17, ahead of The Pendragon second on 92.52 and Sun Gift third on 92.32.
Cruising speed measures the tempo a horse can sustain, and Bring Forth owns the best in the race with a cruisingRank of 1 at 89.5, with Yahoo Bar next on 88. Acceleration measures the turn of foot at the business end, and Sun Gift is clear on an accelerationRank of 1 at 104.32 — the only runner above 100 — with Virtuous Circle second on 96.38. A horse that leads on both composite ability and finishing speed, drawn to get cover, is the screenshot line from this card.
What to watch: whether Bring Forth can control an average tempo from the lead, because Sun Gift's finishing kick is the only thing in the race built to run him down.
