Newcastle Race 6 Preview: Aethelwulf Rated Odds-On At $1.40
Newcastle race 6 preview, tips and rated prices: Kingsley has Aethelwulf on top at rated $1.40, and two market fancies he is happy to oppose.
Newcastle's $300,000 feature at 4:05pm AEST is a small, sharply defined affair: one confirmed pace runner, one standout on the ratings, and a market Kingsley reckons has two of these far too short.
The race
Fine weather, a good surface and the rail in the True position. This is a compact stakes-grade field where the weights do plenty of talking: Changingoftheguard (1) humps 59.5kg while every other runner is in at 54kg. Trainer K A Lees has a pair engaged in Changingoftheguard and Age Of Sail (4), both of whom know Newcastle intimately, and the Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, Ciaron Maher and Matthew Smith stables all have a hand in it.
The pace picture
The tempo band reads Average with a pressure figure of 55.22 per cent — a race with a genuine speed but no suicidal tempo. The key is that only one runner truly wants the front. Changingoftheguard has the lowest ppir in the field at 2 (ppir measures where a horse is predicted to settle, with 1 closest to the lead), and Kingsley's read is that he's the only authentic leader here and will be allowed to roll forward and dictate. Age Of Sail (ppir 3) pressed forward last start, had to sit exposed and dropped away; he'll be rolling forward again, which means the Lees pair likely control the shape between them.
Behind them it gets crowded and slow. Amplify (7) sits fourth on ppir and does her best work late. Aethelwulf (6) rates a ppir of 5, Elliptical (5) a 6 and Bella Montagna (3) a 7 — the three most fancied closers all giving up ground early into a tempo that isn't collapsing. That's the tension in the race: a soft-ish lead for the top weight versus a bank of horses who need the tempo to be honest.
Kingsley's selections
His top pick is Aethelwulf (6), four wins from six starts and a hands-and-heels winner at Rosehill last time. He drops 4kg here and steps beyond 2000m for the first time, and Kingsley is comfortable the trip won't find him out. The caveat is the price: rated $1.40 against a $1.30 market this morning, which is a short quote for a horse taking on stakes company.
His second pick is Changingoftheguard (1), and he's the value angle. Rated $17 against an $11 market this morning, he's the one with a tactical advantage, a class edge on the numbers, a trip he'll relish — Kingsley thinks he wants further again — and the fitness benefit of a first-up run at Randwick where he couldn't quicken. The 59.5kg is the obvious handicap.
His third pick is Amplify (7), rated $31 against a $19 market this morning, in good order after hitting the line for third at Randwick in what Kingsley reads as a career-peak figure. His fourth pick is Age Of Sail (4), rated $51 against a $26 market this morning, third-up and track-wise, and Kingsley is honest that fourth is about where he belongs.
The two he's happy to take on are the short ones. Bella Montagna (3), rated $8.50 against a $5.50 market this morning, has six seconds from 17 starts and hasn't won in eight months. Elliptical (5), rated $16 against a $9.50 market this morning, has two wins from 29 and hasn't saluted in over three years. There are no official Golden Bullet or Good Roughie tips in this race.
The metrics
CAM is the composite ability rating, and Aethelwulf tops it at 95.8632, from Bella Montagna (93.37) and Amplify (87.5485). CSW, the class-speed-weight time rating, has the same horse on top at 99.85, with Elliptical second on 99.21 and Changingoftheguard third on 97.02 — so the ratings do respect the top weight.
Cruising speed, a horse's sustainable tempo, flips the picture entirely: Changingoftheguard leads on 89, Age Of Sail is second on 87.5, and Aethelwulf third on 85.5. Acceleration — raw finishing kick — is where the favourite separates, ranked first on 104.342 ahead of Bella Montagna (100.627) and Amplify (92.4973).
The one-line summary: Aethelwulf is the best horse on three of the four boards, and Changingoftheguard is the only one who can make him do it the hard way.
What to watch: how far clear Changingoftheguard is turning for home, because nothing else in this field wants the front.
