Wagga Race 7 Preview: Sister Shay Maps To Lead, Rated Prices
Wagga race 7 preview: Sister Shay maps to lead at 1400m, Kingsley's top four, rated prices versus the market and the full pace picture.
Sister Shay is the only runner in this Wagga field who maps to lead, and she is also the fastest cruiser in the race. That combination is the story of Race 7.
The race
Wagga Race 7 is an 11-horse affair worth $32,000, jumping at 4:55pm AEDT under overcast skies with the rail in the True position. The weights spread from Associate (1) up top on 61kg down to a trio on 55kg, and the shape of the handicap matters here: one of the best-rated horses in the race is carrying the most, and one of Kingsley's picks is getting a serious weight concession on his latest Wagga run.
The pace picture
The tempo reads Average with a pressure figure of 51.06 per cent — a genuinely neutral speed map, neither a crawl that locks in the leaders nor a meltdown that sets it up for closers. In that band, the horse controlling the tempo is holding the best ticket.
Sister Shay (4) is the one runner with a predicted in-run position of 1, so she maps to lead. Behind her, Quamby (8) and Cando Attitude (6) are the next closest to the speed on predicted positions, with Urafiki (2) in the first half of the field as well. The complication for Cando Attitude is barrier 11, which means work to hold that spot.
The back half of the grid is where the market money sits uncomfortably. Associate is predicted to settle eighth, Hell Of A Fox (5) ninth and Paparazzo (9) tenth — three of Kingsley's four selections are coming from behind into a race with no obvious hot speed to collapse. That is the tension in this one: a sound tempo, a clear leader, and the finishers needing to manufacture their own momentum.
Kingsley's four
His top pick is Sister Shay (4), rated $2.90 against a $2.80 market this morning — the one runner where his number and the market essentially agree. She steps up to 1400m with nine attempts at the journey yielding a win and four seconds, she is second-up where her record reads one win and two placings from three, and she maps in front with no rival close to her on cruising speed.
His second pick Hell Of A Fox (5) is rated $10.00 against an $8.50 market. The case is weight relief — 5kg less than he humped at Wagga last start when he battled on for fifth — plus a third-up profile and three wins from 11 at 1400m. He settles midfield and owns the finishing speed to be arriving late, which makes him the main danger.
His third pick Paparazzo (9) is rated $9.00 against a $7.50 market, backing up six days after Albury with 6kg off and barrier 4 instead of a wide gate. Eight seconds from 20 starts says he is honest, even if he maps near the rear.
His fourth pick Associate (1) is rated $18.00 against a $16.00 market. He resumes from six months with two trials behind him and is two from six at Wagga, but 61kg and a back-half settling position are real obstacles.
The clearest disagreements are elsewhere. Urafiki (2) is rated $9.50 against a $7.00 market after flattening out at Rosehill and sitting 0 from 4 at the trip. Cando Attitude (6) is rated $4.80 against a $3.90 market despite battling late in her past two and drawing the outside. Daze Off (11) is rated $31.00 against a $16.00 market.
What the metrics say
CAM is the composite ability rating, and Urafiki tops it, from Daze Off and Associate. CSW rates class, speed and weight against the clock, and Associate ranks first there, with Confrontational (3) second and Sister Shay third — a reminder that the topweight's raw time figures are the best in the race, even if the weight and the map are not.
Cruising speed measures the tempo a horse can sustain without being asked, and Sister Shay ranks first, ahead of Quamby and Cando Attitude. Acceleration measures the sprint off that cruise, and Associate ranks first, from Mathrin (7) and Urafiki. Sister Shay ranks tenth of 11 on acceleration, which is precisely why getting to the front and dictating matters so much to her.
The bottom line
Fully rated and free to view at theking.zone today, this race reduces to one question: can a field short on genuine early pressure put a leader with the best cruising speed under enough stress to blunt her?
What to watch: whether Cando Attitude crosses from barrier 11 to challenge for the lead, or lets Sister Shay roll forward unopposed.
