How I Compare Top Mares on Peak Ratings Over the Last 600 and 200
How peak last 600 and last 200 ratings separate five top mares, and why the lowest overall rating can hold the fastest sprint.
Recorded September 2025 for The Bookies That Still Let Me Bet. Any figures mentioned are from that time.
One overall rating rarely tells you the whole story about a horse. I went through the big five mares and lined up their class speed weight ratings, then put their peak last 600 and last 200 figures next to them. The order changes depending on which number you look at, and that is the point. A horse can rate modestly overall and still own the fastest sprint in the group.
Where they sit on class speed weight
Via Sistina leads on class speed weight with a 112, which was the Cox Plate win. Take that run out and she sits on a 105, equal with Autumn Glow's last start win over Gangster Granny. Then we have Lady Shenandoah on 102 from her last start and Treasure The Moment on 102 winning the Memsie. They are equal. Then we drop to Alyana on 98, and her peak was also her last start, behind Via Sistina. So the overall order reads 105, 105, 102, 102 and 98.
That is a clean enough ladder. It tells you what each mare has produced at her best when you account for class, speed and weight together. What it does not tell you is how they produced it.
The last 600 flips the order
These sectional figures are peaks, so what each horse can run at her best. Over the last 600, Alyana leads on 146, from Via Sistina at 143 and Treasure The Moment at 141. Lady Shenandoah and Autumn Glow are equal on 120.
The mare with the lowest class speed weight rating has the fastest peak sprint in the group. That is worth sitting with. Part of the reason is where they race. Lady Shenandoah and particularly Autumn Glow tend to sit closer to the speed. Treasure The Moment was third or fourth on the fence last time. Via Sistina can sit fourth or fifth, and Alyana tends to be midfield. They can all race closer on their day depending on the barrier, but a horse that gets back and comes from behind in a slower run race will post bigger closing figures than a horse that leads.
The last 200 is where the gap shows
I rate the last 200 as often extremely important as well. Via Sistina leads on 150, Alyana on 141, then there is a big gap to the other three. Treasure The Moment on 120, Autumn Glow on 120 and Lady Shenandoah on 118.
So Via Sistina clearly has the best ratings overall. Between the other three there is not much in it. Alyana's lower class speed weight rating comes out of some slower run races, but she has a dynamite sprint and the fastest peak last 600 of the lot, including Via Sistina. If she can sit a bit closer in her races, she is going to be awfully hard to beat moving forward.
The takeaway is to read the overall rating and the peak sectionals as separate pieces of information, then ask what the race shape and the horse's position in the run did to each of them. A low overall figure out of slow run races is not the same thing as a slow horse.
